Verizon Breaks Internet With 5Gbps Speeds

A couple of weeks ago, Verizon announced that it had expanded its mmWave 5G network. And although it may not be comparable with T-Mobile's "nationwide" 5G coverage, it does offer an impressive speed. Today, however, Verizon announced that its mmWave 5G spectrum has broken the 5Gbps barrier.

This is, of course, all thanks to the teaming up of Verizon, Ericsson, and Qualcomm. With the partnership, they were able to achieve 5G peak speeds of 5.06Gbps. The data speed was achieved in a lab setting with the use of 800MHz bandwidth in 28GHz mmWave spectrum along with 40MHz for its 4G LTE anchor. In order to help boost the speed, Verizon made use of carrier aggregation, which combines several spectrum channels.

The test was conducted using Ericsson's Radio System portfolio, a 5G infrastructure equipment. They paired this with a 5G smartphone test device running on Qualcomm Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System. This system comes equipped with third generation Qualcomm QTM535 mmWave antenna modules.

Of course, this is all great news for the three companies. But considering that the speed was achieved in a lab setting, it's interesting to see if it will be experienced in a real world environment. If the same factors are replicated, however, it won't be long before 5.06Gbps speeds would be a norm.

Verizon's mmWave 5G spectrum is already available in certain areas within 55 cities in the state. Although you might not be able to get the same 5.06Gbps speeds derived from the testing, but it's not difficult to imagine getting crazy fast speeds with your 5G smartphone.

  1. Hmmm, how long will my 3GB monthly data allotment last at 5Gbps? You better not have a plan that automatically charges for extra data usage!!! This new high speed on 5G is meaningless until we all get at least 1000x more data allowance on our plans.

    1. That is why the mm 5g is available on the unlimited plans. Let's say that you had a 3gb plan somehow connecting to mm wave 5g- it doesn't change data usage if you download an app or something it's the same amount of data just given in a shorter period of time.
