We could be seeing a lot more affordable 5G devices in 2021. Thanks to MediaTek's latest announcement, it's possible that smartphone manufacturers will be tapping on their latest chipset for this purpose.

MediaTek recently unveiled its latest chipset called the Dimensity 700. This is a 7nm chipset that is largely similar to the Dimensity 720, except that it comes with 5G modem component.

The new Dimensity 700 supports carrier aggregation, meaning it is able to connect faster with up to 2.77 Gbps downlink speeds. This also produces a seamless handover between 5G cells. Other features included in the modem are Dual SIM, Dual Standby, and VoNR (Voice over New Radio). It also comes with global 5G NR band support and "5G UltraSave", a power saving technology by MediaTek.

Dimensity 700 comes with a couple of Cortex-A76 cores clocked in at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. It is capable of connecting to up to 12GB of LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 two-lane storage. As for display, the new chip is capable of powering 1080p+ resolution with 90Hz refresh rate. This is possible even though the GPU is ARM Mali-G57 MC2. Video capture is limited to 1080p resolution. The chipset is also capable of handling up to 64-megapixel cameras.

MediaTek will be releasing the new chipset in Q1 2021. It can be expected on devices within the $200 and $300 price range.
